Vietnamese Pronouns
A real-life experience
This Substack is about life in Việt Nam from the viewpoint of a 11-year expat who spent his first 60 years in a low-context culture.
I read something recently that blew my mind. In a good way.
If you live in Việt Nam, travel here frequently, or it’s on your “some day” list, your experience of this beautiful and sometimes frustrating country will be exponentially better if you read and follow Connla Stokes’ Substack.
He’s lived here pretty much forever and his writings have a depth that I can only dream about achieving.
For example…
I’ve written extensively about my takes on Vietnamese culture. I’ve even written about pronouns. Connla’s piece had me hanging my head in disbelief at how much better he brings you with him into an unforgettable Vietnamese pronoun experience.
For my readers with zero intention of ever traveling to or living in Việt Nam, Pulling rank with pronouns is still an enjoyable read.
Until next time…

Oh the intricacies -- so good. Thank you for sharing. In my work in progress, "Children of the War" the Vietnamese friend of a (younger) American refers to him as "tall little brother" -- makes me feel like my uneducated instinct was on track.
