I don't know how you ever finished. I probably would have stopped funding after the first run in with the FIL changed plans without discussion. FIL who doesn't listen is bad feng shui.

In retrospect, that is exactly what I should have done. There were many more opportunities to pull the plug, and because my marriage was still good, I didn't do it. Now that it's done, I'm working on a way forward that works for both my daughter and me.

FIL who doesn't listen is standard issue, especially if he's the first-born. He's never heard "no" in his life and certainly isn't going to hear it from a f*cking foreigner, even if said foreigner raised him, his wife, his daughter, and his granddaughter out of abject poverty.

For any expats in VN married to a local, don't give in to the pressure like I did. Rent until you die.

Renting just makes more sense to me when real estate prices in Vietnam are insane compared to local incomes.

The ONLY reason I built the house was so my daughter would always have a nice place to live. A smarter move would've been to put the money in a trust account for her in the US so after I'm gone, she'd have more options.
